Carlisle United vs Portsmouth

Carling Cup

19:45 Tuesday 22nd September 2009

As you may already know, I like to pick out upsets and Carlisle look the most likely to be the giant-killers of Round Three since Portsmouth are the first ever team to have suffered defeat in their first six Premier League matches.

Portsmouth have been woeful under pitiful Paul Hart, who is likely to be without injured trio Steve Finnan, Hermann Hreidarsson and Papa Bouba Diop while Mike Williamson, Jamie O’Hara, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Tommy Smith are all cup-tied.

An away trip to Brunton Park in Cumbria on a cold, dark Tuesday night is not the time to spend the energy on a meaningless Cup campaign, Pompey will be looking ahead to their next match with Everton so this is the chance for Carlisle to pounce. A win for them and a trip to a Premiership club is far from meaningless to them, it could pay for the new striker they need.

Dangerous winger Kevan Hurst is back from a knee injury and Scott Dobie is due a goal or two…

Carlisle have had a woeful start to their season too, but I have a funny feeling they might be the ones to cause this round’s upset after beating in-form Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the last round… If Blackpool can put four past Wigan’s Michael Pollitt then maybe, just maybe Carlisle can do the same to 39 year old David “Calamity” James.
