In Dead Load there are a couple of action scenes and explosions that need plenty of pre-visualisation and thought as to how they’ll be realised. So over the past few days I’ve been shot listing, storyboarding and generally trying to get my ideas down on paper. It’s hard work I tell ya.
One scene that I’m drawing on as a reference is the fantastic “Chicken Run” scene from Rebel Without A Cause. It’s a stunning, melodramatic scene. I love the style, the lighting, the use of colour, but most of all, the sense of darkness and impending doom.
It’s well worth having a look…
It’s a fantastic scene. James Dean has very little dialogue yet somehow exudes a coolness rarely matched since. His understated reactions and expressions are terrific and he says all he needs to say in the way he smokes a cigarette.
And now I guess I’d better get back to drawing up my shotlist.
